Building Healthier Communities

Freelance work on a 70-page coffee table publication for the University of Queensland’s Healthy Communities Research Centre. I did half the writing and photography and oversaw editing and production.

FQ Magazine

QCOSS’s flagship quarterly publication. I was joint writer and editor from Jan 2010 to Jan 2013.

QCOSS Annual Report

I wrote and edited the 2011 and 2012 editions and was responsible for most of the photography.

While at QCOSS I also wrote media releases and other copy for web and print.

The Human Rights Defender magazine:

Amnesty International’s flagship bi-monthly publication before it was discontinued in 2010. I edited the publication for two years and wrote for it for four. 

I also wrote or edited and oversaw the production of the majority of their campaign materials (fundraising excluded).

A long time ago:

As Publications Manager at the Queensland University of Technology for 15 years I edited and supervised the production of a vast number of promotional and marketing publications. Our work twice won Gold in the Australian Serif Awards for business communication. I also supervised a web standards team which looked after the university’s corporate promotional web presence as well as a printery and a web design section.

Shortly after leaving the university I wrote the majority of the copy for the 2006 edition of QUT Solutions. 

And even further back:

While working as Deputy Director, Information Services, for the Brisbane City Council from 1987 to 1989 I was responsible for overseeing the production and editing of all their brochures and promotional publications, including the annual report. Work included copy writing and overseeing the production of a full-page advertisement (broadsheet) each week.

And in the dim and distant past:

I spent a year or two working as a sports reporter and photographer, then I became a News Reporter for the Daily Dispatch newspaper and was subsequently appointed News Editor.

I went on to write technical articles and become Deputy Editor of Farmer’s Weekly, South Africa’s largest English-language agricultural magazine.
